Junior Colin Fletcher and senior Luke Rothermel combined for 49 of the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team's 59 points to sweep the season series against Troy on Saturday.
"Tonight was a good bounce back game for the team," head coach Ron Doughtie said. "They played very well on both sides of the ball, limited our turnovers and finished at the basket well."
The Hornets held a slim 15-13 lead after the opening quarter, however the Trojans rallied to take the 2nd quarter 13-9 to lead 26-24 at the half. Wellsboro put together two great quarters in the second half. They outscored Troy 17-8 in the 3rd to take a 41-34 lead.
Troy did outscore the Hornets in the 4th, 19-18, however Wellsboro held on for the win.
Rothermel paced Wellsboro in the first half, scoring 14 of his 18 points. Fletcher, on the other hand, carried the team in the second. Fletcher finished with a game-high 31 points, 25 of those coming in the final 16 minutes.
"Fletcher had a monster game and took the ball to the basket well, plus he made them pay at the foul line," continued Doughtie. "Luke complimented that with a good offensive output especially early in the game. Defensively a good team effort and we hit the boards hard."
Sophomore Griffin Morral and senior Marek Mascho scored 4 points each and senior Jonathan Carl added two points, but grabbed 11 rebounds. Rothermel finished with a double-double, adding 10 boards and 5 assists. Mascho made 3 assists and grabbed 3 boards, Fletcher added 4 rebounds and Morral made 5 assists.
Spencer Martin had 12 to lead Troy while Trey Teribury finished with 10 points.
Wellsboro cruised to a 50-17 JV win to sweep the evening, led by 17 points from freshman Braylen Jessup.
