Hornets Close Out Regular Season With 55-50 Win At Central Columbia, Qualify For District Playoffs

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team jumped out to an early lead on their way to earning a 55-50 win over Central Columbia Monday.

The win also qualifies the team for the District IV Class 3A playoffs as the 9th seed.

"We got contributions from everyone in the starting lineup pretty evenly across the board going against a tough team in a must-win situation," head coach Ron Doughtie said. "A lot of guys rose to the task. I'm really proud of the effort and it was great to see everybody step up the way we did."

The Hornets held a 16-9 lead after the first quarter, only to have Central Columbia storm back with a 17-11 2nd quarter to trail 27-26 at halftime. Wellsboro outscored the Bluejays 16-15 take a 43-41 lead heading into the 4th, which the Hornets took 12-9 to close out the win.

Three Hornets scored in double figures on the evening, led by junior Colin Fletcher with 14. Sophomore Griffin Morral finished with 12 points and senior Luke Rothermel finished with 10. Senior Marek Mascho pitched in 9 points, senior Jonathan Carl added 8 points, and freshman James Doughtie added two.

Rothermel added 15 rebounds and 5 assists to pull off a near triple-double while Mascho added 4 assists and 2 steals. Carl added 10 boards and 2 steals, Fletcher grabbed 6 rebounds and Morral had 4 boards. Carl, Fletcher and Morral also blocked shots.

Max Roesch led all scorers with 26 points.

Wellsboro won the JV game 40-25 to finish their season 21-1. Freshman Braylen Jessup led the team with 8 points and Doughtie added 7.

Wellsboro (11-11) will be back in action next week once post-season play starts.
