Hornets Sweep Season-Opening Track Meet At Athens

The Wellsboro Track & Field teams each picked up three NTL wins as they swept a quad meet between Athens, Canton and Sayre Wednesday afternoon to kick off their season.

"I kept reminding our athletes that this was our first meet and some of us hadn't even run their full event yet," said girls head coach Elizabeth Hoover. "Our pole vaulters hadn't even gone over the bar until last night. If I could say one thing it would be, they exceeded my expectations!"

The Lady Hornets scored 119 points, followed by Athens with 90, Canton (42) and Sayre (7). In the boys meet the Hornets edged Athens 114 to 108. Canton scored 36 points and Sayre finished with 7.

Junior Piper Hoprich won the 100m in 12.20 followed by sophomore Luna Moyer (13.24) in 4th and senior Sophia Yoder (13.51) in 5th, sophomore Jennifer Belz (18.59) was 2nd in the 100m hurdles with freshman Olive Twoey (19.03), freshman Kaci Kosek (20.28) and freshman Lilly Sprouse (20.45) in 5th. Hoprich took 1st in the 200m (25.86) with freshman Paige Rush (30.57) finishing 5th, sophomore Isla Twoey (52.74) won the 300m hurdles with Olive Twoey (58.23) and Belz (59.79) taking 4th and 5th, and junior Lauren Kosek (1:10.51) and Sprouse (1:15.38) were 2nd and 3rd in the 400m.

Lauren Kosek won the 800m in 2:37.33 with sister Kaci finishing 4th (2:59.13). Kosek also claimed the top spot in the 1600m in 5:49.53 and th3 3200m in 12:25.97.

Sophomore Lauren Gehman (4-ft, 6) and senior Kristina Belz (4-ft, 6) went 1-2 in the high jump with junior Ella Boyce and freshmen Kaydence Pierce and June Roth tying for 4th with jumps of 4-ft, 2. Junior Ellie Largey was 2nd in the pole vault (7-ft), Kristina Belz (15-ft, 1.5) and Gehman (14-ft, 8) were 2nd and 3rd in the long jump, and Gehman (31-ft, 2) took 1st in the triple jump with Isla Twoey (30-ft, 5) placing 5th.

Pierce (68-ft, 4) was 5th in the discus, senior Taylor Main (85-ft, 8) and junior Sienna Zengerle (72-ft- 2) were 2nd and 4th in the javelin, and sophomore Katie Whitney (23-ft, 7.75) was 4th in the shot put.

The Lady Hornets won the 4x400m relay (4:57.55), was 2nd in the 4x800m (13:45.42) and won the 4x100m (52.63).

For the boys senior Jonathan Carl took 3rd in the 100m (11.66), sophomore Brayden Benjamin (17.74) won the 110m hurdles, senior Aaron Kirk (25.13) was 6th in the 200m, senior David Seeling (44.51) won the 300m hurdles with Benjamin (50.78) taking 3rd, and sophomores Logan Johnson (1:00.07) and Ransom Schultz (1:02.06) were 4th and 5th in the 400m.

Senior Jude Cuneo (2:10.58) was 2nd in the 800m, senior Henry Whitney (4:46.86) and senior Max Macias (5:12.93) were 1st and 5th in the 1600m, and Whitney (11:17.46) and Macias (11:18.46) claimed the top two spots in the 3200m.

Seeling won the high jump (5-ft, 8) with sophomore Connor Hartman (5-ft, 2) tying for 2nd, juniors Zander Rachiele (7-ft, 6), Jacob Smith (7-ft, 6) and Dylan Tomlinson (7-ft) were 3rd-5th in the pole vault, and Benjamin (18-ft, 1), freshman Liam Stevens (17-ft, 10), Schultz (17-ft, 6), and freshman Desmun Hennigan (17-ft, 3) swept the long jump. Carl (41-ft, 2.5) and Benjamin (37-0.5) took 1st and 2nd in the triple jump, freshman Conlen Whitsell (97-ft, 4) and senior Jacob Thurstin (90-ft) were 3rd and 4th in the discus, Schultz (119-ft, 1) won the javelin with Rachiele (99-ft, 10) finishing 4th, and Schultz (36-ft, 8.25) and freshman Jaxon Wilson (35-ft, 3.5) were 4th and 5th in the shot put.

The Hornets won the 4x400m (3:41.88) and the 4x800m (9:01.34) relays and was 2nd in the 4x100m (48.28).

The team is back in action next Tuesday against Williamson and Wyalusing for their first home meet.
