After a close first half, Towanda pulled away in the 2nd for a 55-24 win over the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team Thursday.
The Lady Hornets trailed 6-5 after the 1st and 21-16 at the half before the Lady Knights put together a 20-point 3rd quarter to break the game open.
Towanda outscored Wellsboro 34-8 in the 2nd half.
"The young Lady Hornets played a good first half of basketball," said head coach Maureen Poirier. "Towanda rotated 10 girls throughout the game and they just wore us down with their full court pressure and fresh legs. I was really pleased with our defensive effort along with the grit the girls played with tonight."
Sophomore Kate Bryant led Wellsboro with 9 points and 4 rebounds. Senior Lily Wagner and Amelia Hulslander had 4 points each, freshman Lena Rothermel added 3 points, and sophomore Adelyn Frantz and Dillyn Patt chipped in two points apiece. Frantz added 5 rebounds and Lawton made 3 steals and blocked a shot.
Brynn Woodruff led all scorers with 14 points.
Towanda won the JV game 47-16. Rothermel led the team with 10 points while freshman Shayla Hamblin added 4.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 4-16 (2-12 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action Saturday afternoon at home against Athens.
